Brain Fever
Do you ever stop to pray and find your mind racing like a turbine out of control? Does your focus shift immediately to your problems, and away from God? It’s easy to miss the heart of prayer by being so self-preoccupied.
I am growing in this area by learning to focus on who God is instead of using prayer as a place to work on solving problems.
Prayer is not a few hurried thoughts in the morning; prayer is more a way of life. Prayer is not exclusively asking God for things for myself, but prayer is contemplation, meditation, and simply waiting in silence in the presence of God. Imaginative prayer is how one author puts it.
If Jesus needed extended times of prayer retreat with God, don’t we too? If prayer is to become a way of life for us as it was for Him, we need to change our priorities so that we have more mental space for being with Jesus.
Being a disciple is not just a matter of making a difference but, by the grace of God, being a difference.
“It’s not the parts of the Bible I don’t understand that scare me, but the parts I do understand.” Mark Twain
Psalm 92
It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening, accompanied by the harp and lute and the harmony of the lyre. You thrill me, LORD, with all you have done for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done. O LORD, what great miracles you do! And how deep are your thoughts. Only an ignorant person would not know this! Only a fool would not understand it. You are exalted in the heavens. You, O LORD, continue forever. You have made me as strong as a wild bull. How refreshed I am by your power! The godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted into the LORD's own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. They will declare, "The LORD is just! He is my rock! There is nothing but goodness in him!"
Psalm 46:10
Be silent and know that I am God!
